Most of us know that a well-balanced diet and physical exercise lead to optimal health, but do we prioritize social wellness in the same way?
How Exercise Fuels Productivity and Performance
Scientific evidence shows that exercising regularly unlocks productivity and brain power. Learn how habitual exercise fuels consistent performance.
In addition to providing cardiac and musculoskeletal benefits, regular workouts boost mood, memory and productivity. In fact, regular physical activity is an integral part of the lives of some of the nation’s most successful entrepreneurs and leaders, as well as bande members who credit our instructors with improving their performance, efficiency, energy and brainpower.
Those who bande together, as well as many others, have discovered that exercise is the key to unlocking productivity and brain performance. And neuroscientists agree.
The Science Connection
In a controlled study conducted by the University of Geneva (UNIGE), scientists concluded that intense physical effort can be directly linked to increased brain performance and memory. The feeling of exhilaration you get after completing a challenging workout is the direct result of endocannabinoids. These small molecules, which are produced during physical exertion, pass through the blood-brain barrier to bind to receptors in the hippocampus (the main brain structure for memory processing) to trigger feelings of euphoria and well-being.
The UNIGE study provided direct evidence of a correlation between the intensity of an individual’s movement and endocannabinoid levels. Even a brief 15 minutes on a bicycle produced increased brain activation in the areas responsible for both memory and motor functions.
Forming Healthy Habits That Endure
It’s clear that consistently setting aside time for exercise can help you further cognitive capacity and improve productivity. But sticking to this healthy habit is often easier said than done.
James Clear, author of the New York Times bestseller Atomic Habits, offers three core ideas for making exercise a lasting habit:
- Develop a ritual
- Start small
- Focus on the habit first, then results
One effective way to put Clear’s philosophy into practice is by finding a regular time of the week when you can commit to a workout, booking a class ahead of time, staying accountable, then repeating this routine week over week. Maryann A. tells us she anxiously awaits bande’s Sunday emails for new class highlights then books classes for the upcoming week. Lauren P. notes that she values how instructors hold her accountable to stick with them during each and every class.
With the restrictions and changes due to the COVID pandemic, creating and continuing habitual exercise has become increasingly difficult. Without the physical separation of work and recreation, including exercise, finding a consistent way to work out can feel like a never-ending battle between rising distractions and diminishing motivation.
That’s why we created bande.
